Memorial Day Gifts for Grandparents

Did your child’s grandma or grandpa ever serve in military? If so, Memorial Day can be a very special time for her grandparents. Too often, it is just another day to have a picnic or go camping. Don’t get me wrong. Those are great things for families to do. But this year, if you have special grandparents who were or still are in the military, you might want to consider doing something special with them. Just taking the time to say “Thank you” can be a wonderful gift for grandparents. Celebrating the day with them can make it even more special.

You could:

  • Go to a Memorial Day parade with your child’s grandparents.
  • Invite them over for a picnic. If their health doesn’t allow it, take the picnic to their house.
  • Plan a TV marathon of fun war movies that are age appropriate for the little ones – there are some great oldie goldie funny ones that are child-friendly. If her grandparents are like my dad, they will love to see those one more time.
  • Attend a special government memorial service that many cities host. Just check your city’s website or call your city information line for details.
  • Help your child put together a special basket or box of gifts for grandma and/or grandpa to say THANK YOU. This could include a card your child made, a picture she drew of them in their uniform, a cupcake, and a new flag for their front door.

These are all fun and entertaining things. Even more important, you are wisely training them for a lifetime of appreciation. You’re teaching your child respect, gratitude, and the joys of giving. What a great way to memorialize Memorial Day.
