Home alone on one of the big family holidays of the year? Yup, it happens. It happens to 20-somethings, it happens to Boomers, and it happens a lot to Senior Citizens! It’s not one of the BIG holidays, but it’s still a fun family holiday and hard to be alone!

A great way to share our love of holidays, our “Holiday Heart,” with others who may be alone on the 4th is to invite them over for a potluck. I personally like to assign items to people so that we don’t wind up with five pies and no salad. Be sure to assign paper plates and cups along with plastic silverware so there is less work for you. Then you’ll be more excited about doing this often. You might even want to assign one person to get some decorations. And, if your area allows it, ask everyone who can to bring a favorite firework or three. That way, no one has to spend a fortune and you can have fun rating the different fireworks and voting on the best.

If that isn’t an option and you have close family or friends who will be alone, how about taking some holiday gift baskets? Those elderly men and women will be so grateful to you. You could fill them with cookies decorated for the 4th and have some red, white, and blue helium balloons attached.  Add some cute holiday flowers, like red, white and blue carnations. If they don’t mind a bit of noise, tuck in some poppers that you just pull and they pop. Be sure to warn them they are loud and may have streamers to clean up.  One caution, if it’s only going to a senior citizen, you might want to skip those. My mom would HATE them as much as I love them. You might add a patriotic movie DVD – how about Independence Day? Don’t forget to buy flags to go in it. Those cute little mini-flags would look great. As a finishing touch, add some fried chicken, potato salad, and a plastic container with red strawberries, blueberries, and a cup of white whipped topping. You could easily pick all those up at a local grocery store and it’ll be a sweet treat for them. Your holiday baskets will make a lonely face break into a beautiful smile of joy and anticipation. Isn’t that a great way to celebrate!

For those beloveds who live far away, I like to send an online photo gift album with lots of smiles and a fireworks background. When you give them a call sometime during the day, I bet you’ll hear those sweet smiles coming back to encourage your own Holiday Heart! Now that’s a real Holiday Treasure!
